Methods of Medically Assisted Fertilization

Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAR) is a set of medical procedures used to help couples facing infertility problems achieve pregnancy. These procedures include the use of medical technologies and careful monitoring of the reproductive process, with the aim of achieving a successful conception. There are several different methods of medically assisted reproduction, including:

Intrauterine insemination (AIH/IUI)
is a procedure where the doctor uses previously selected sperm from your partner and applies them directly into the uterus at the most suitable moment to increase the chances of pregnancy.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
is the most common type of MPO, which involves the aspiration of eggs from the woman's ovaries, which are then fertilized with the partner's sperm in specially equipped laboratory conditions. This procedure enables the creation of embryos that are later returned to the uterus.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
is a method in which the sperm is selected, activated and injected into the egg with the help of a glass microinjection pipette. It is used in male infertility, when sperm do not have the ability to fertilize an egg by themselves.
Cryoembryo transfer (FET)
During the IVF procedure, all additional embryos obtained that cannot be used during one embryo transfer are frozen. The procedure helps us in the case when the initial IVF cycle did not result in pregnancy, and instead of re-stimulation we can use embryos that are in cryopreservation.
Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection (IMSI)
is a modified variant of ICSI, which is used to evaluate individual parts of the reservoir using an inverted microscope at a magnification of 6000 to 13000 times. The use of this method results in a higher number of successful pregnancies and a lower number of chromosomal abnormalities.
MicroTESE/TESA
is a surgical procedure used to extract sperm from the seminiferous tubules of the male testicles. It is used for men with non-obstructive azoospermia, which is when a man cannot produce enough sperm to have a detectable amount in his semen. During microTESE procedures, in non-obstructive azoospermia, sperm can be found in 50-65 percent of cases. In obstructive azoospermia, sperm is always found in the testicles.
Induction of ovulation and timed intercourse
is a method that can be used in patients who have irregular cycles in order to achieve ovulation and in patients where we want to stimulate the ovaries to produce more eggs. Induction of ovulation does not require stimulation by injections, instead drugs for oral administration are used.
Assisted hatching
is a method of thinning the protective envelope of the embryo, which is called the zona peludica. With the help of a laser, a small crack is created in the outer shell of the embryo, which makes the hatching of the embryo more successful and thus leads to higher pregnancy rates.
Cryopreservation
is the procedure of artificial freezing of cells or tissues at extremely low temperatures. Freezing eggs and sperm enables their storage for a certain period. There are many conditions where sperm cryopreservation is indicated, such as some forms of treatment that require chemotherapy or radiation.
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)
is a method that, with the help of genetic screening mechanisms, allows to determine the genetic abnormalities of embryos before their implantation in the uterus.
Reproductive surgery
Certain conditions require a surgical approach in the treatment of infertility and therefore belong to the methods of medically assisted fertilization.
